## Knowing How Much Salt You Need

**Salt levels should be between 3,000 and 4,000 ppm**. These levels *should* satisfy most saltwater generators’ recommendations, but you should always check your operator’s manual to get more exact levels.

How much salt you need to add depends on how much is already present in the pool.

Testing is the only way to determine your salt levels. You should have a [testing kit](https://www.testyourownpool.com/testing/pool-test-kits) that includes sodium chloride testing, like the [Taylor K-2006-SALT](https://amzn.to/3woL9rK).

A separate salt tester can be used if you already have a reliable test kit.
