# Will Using a Magic Eraser in a Pool Skimmer Help Clear a Green & Cloudy Pool? (Spoiler: NO!)

Like the viral trend of [putting copper pipes in the skimmer](https://www.testyourownpool.com/maintenance-tips/copper-pipe-in-pool), there has been videos resurfacing on social media of putting a magic eraser in your pool’s skimmer to help clear a green pool.

Simply put, this is not true. Now, there *are* valuable ways to use a magic eraser to clean grime and scum from pool surfaces and steps, **but it will not help clear a green pool or algae**.

## **What is a Magic Eraser?**

A close-up of a Magic Eraser sponge shows a simple white cleaning pad made of melamine foam. This material acts like ultra-fine sandpaper, gently scrubbing away dirt, stains, and grime from various surfaces.

In fact, the sponge itself doesn’t really have any active ingredients. It works as hard as you scrub!

## **The Magic Eraser Will Not Help Solve Water Issues**

According to these viral posts, simply placing a Magic Eraser in the pool skimmer or letting it float around will absorb dirt, oils, and algae.

Many claim that it helps maintain a clean pool with less effort. A good rule of thumb to follow in life: if it’s too good to be true, it usually is!

The Magic Eraser doesn’t help fight an [algae outbreak](https://www.testyourownpool.com/maintenance/green-algae) or any other water issue you have. It might absorb some dirt and contaminants in the water (as any sponge would), but that is about it.

## What a Magic Eraser Can Be Used For in a Pool

These sponges *can* help you keep the pool surfaces and tiles clean. Some users find success [cleaning the inside of their skimmers](https://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/magic-erasers-are-they-safe-to-use-on-and-in-your-pool-or-not.104868/#post-914597) and [scrubbing waterline tiles](https://www.reddit.com/r/PoolPros/comments/1f2tbeq/how_can_i_clean_up_tile_so_it_looks_like_bottom/).

Keep in mind, it is an abrasive sponge, so it can wipe away a small layer of grout or tile lines which can damage any sealant that may be on it.

It’s a good idea to first test it in a smaller area first to make sure there are no visual stains after cleaning.

Take not of the fact that the manufacturer’s of the Magic Eraser have not tested their product in a pool, so use one at your own risk.

## **There is No Magic Bullet For Pool Maintenance**

The best way to keep your pool clean and clear is proper maintenance and testing! There is no substitute, ever.

It truly is a waste of time, money, and energy to try these viral “hacks” that come across your feed.

Pool maintenance isn’t hard, but it can be made more complicated by trying things that will only cause potential headaches down the road!
