It’s that time of the year again when colder climate pool owners nationwide begin to think about opening their pools for the season!

We turned to Google Trends, which allows us to see how people search online over time.

Using 2025 search data related to pool openings, we could pinpoint the weeks when each state experiences the highest interest in getting their pools ready for summer.

Let’s look at when each state typically opens its pools for the swim season.

Memorial Day Is The Start of Pool Season

In what might not seem like too much of a surprise, the most popular week for pool openings across the country is Memorial Day Weekend, with 15 states showing the highest trend during that week.

This coincides with the unofficial start of summer for many Americans, making it a prime time to dust off the grill and welcome the warmer swimming weather!

Hawaii Opens Up The Earliest

Another not-shocking development, perhaps? The Aloha state’s highest trending week for pool opening was in February!

While closing is probably not too common for Hawaii pool owners, they definitely want to open at the end of their “winter” period.

California Has No Preferred Opening Time

California had the least amount of data when it came to opening times.

Probably not surprising, they don’t seem to have any official opening time as the majority of their pool’s are most likely open all year.

Unfortunately, the wildfires in LA in 2025 could have also skewed some of the data as large, populous areas understandably had other obligations to worry about.

Washington State is the “Official” Latest Opening

There is a saying in Washington, particularly Seattle and the surrounding areas: summer doesn’t start until July 4th.

This tracks with the interest in opening pools, as it falls right during the 4th of July festivities!

Further Understanding the Data

All trend and interest data was gathered from Google Trends using the full year 2025. Searches were geared towards “open pool” and “when to open pool”, which drove the most interest overall compared to related searches.

Trends were then broken down by state. To determine the most popular time, the week with the highest interest value was used.
