pH tells us if pool water is more basic (alkaline) or acidic. one of the most important numbers in your pool water.
pH should be between 7.2 and 8.0. If it’s too high, chlorine becomes less effective and scaling can form. If it’s too low, your water can become corrosive and uncomfortable to swim in.
Use our calculator below to determine what you need to add or lower your pool’s pH.
Using the Pool pH Calculator
The first step in determining the output of the calculator is knowing how many gallons your pool holds. If you don’t know it, use our pool volume calculator for a good estimate.
To lower pH, it is recommended to use muriatic acid. Most commonly this is sold in strengths like 31.45%, 29%, or 14.5%. We currently do not have dry acid as an option for this calculator. Muriatic acid will also decrease total alkalinity (TA).
The best way to raise pH is with borax, most commonly used as a laundry detergent or cleaning agent. Borax is recommended because it has very little impact on TA levels. You can also use soda ash, but that will increase TA at a higher level.
